Understanding the problem
What is a foggy thermos?
A thermos, or "sealed unit", is made of two or three panes separated by an insulating gas (argon), all sealed airtight inside your existing window frame.
Over time, the seal can fail. Moisture then seeps between the panes and forms permanent fog that no cleaning removes — along with a loss of insulation.
The good news? We replace only this sealed unit inside your existing frame, without touching the rest of the window.
The diagnosis
Signs your sealed unit needs replacing
Not all fog is the same. These are the real signs that the seal on your thermos has failed — and what to do about it.
Fog between the panes
The #1 sign. When fog is trapped between the two panes and can't be wiped away, the seal has failed.
Broken seal
The argon gas has escaped: the window's thermal insulation is lost and cold seeps in.
Cold draft
A draft near the window, even when closed? Another sign of a sealed unit at end of life.
Cloudy glass
A whitish deposit can form between the panes and irreversibly reduce clarity.
Why replace only the glass
Your frame is still solid. Replacing only the sealed unit within the existing frame costs 3 to 5 times less than a full window, takes 1 to 2 hours per pane, and preserves the character of your building.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is a foggy thermos?
A "thermos" is a sealed glass unit made of two or three panes separated by an insulating gas (argon). Over time, the seal can fail: moisture seeps between the panes and forms permanent fog that no cleaning can remove. This is a clear sign the sealed unit needs to be replaced.
Can a foggy window be repaired without replacing the window?
Yes. In most cases, only the sealed unit needs to be replaced — your existing frame stays in place. It is far more economical than replacing the whole window, and just as effective.
How much does a thermos replacement cost in Montreal?
Our prices are transparent and listed online, starting at $150. The exact cost depends on the glass size, glass type (double, triple, Low-E) and quantity. Use our calculator or request a free quote: the price is confirmed at the free diagnosis.
How long does it take?
The diagnosis and measurement are done quickly on site. Your sealed unit is then custom-made within 24 to 72 hours and installed cleanly. In most cases, everything is settled in under a week.
Is defogging worth it?
Defogging (injection) masks the symptom temporarily: it removes the fog for 6 to 24 months but restores neither the seal nor the insulation. Replacing the sealed unit fixes the problem for good, with a written warranty.
Do you serve my neighbourhood?
We serve Montreal and all of Greater Montreal: Plateau Mont-Royal, Rosemont, Verdun, Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, Villeray, Ahuntsic, Hochelaga, plus Laval, the South Shore and the North Shore. Contact us to confirm your area.
What is the lifespan of a thermos window pane?
A thermos pane (sealed unit) typically lasts 15 to 25 years. Lifespan depends on the quality of the original seal, exposure to sun and temperature swings, and moisture buildup in the frame. The first sign of failure is permanent fog between the panes: the seal has broken and the argon gas has escaped. At that point, only replacing the thermos restores the insulation.
How much does a thermos glass replacement cost?
A thermos pane starts at $150 and varies with size, glass type (double, triple, Low-E) and quantity. Replacing only the thermos costs 3 to 5 times less than replacing the whole window. The exact price is confirmed during the free diagnosis, and the written quote holds no surprises.
Can a thermos pane be repaired, or must it be replaced?
Once the seal is broken and fog has set in between the panes, a thermos cannot truly be \"repaired\": the only durable fix is to replace the sealed unit. The good news is we replace only the thermos pane in your existing frame, without changing the window. Any drill-and-defog method is temporary and does not restore the insulation.
What is Low-E glass with argon gas?
Low-E (low-emissivity) glass carries a thin coating that reflects heat: it keeps warmth inside in winter and pushes it away in summer. Combined with argon gas sealed between the panes, it clearly improves insulation over a plain double-glazed unit. We can build Low-E argon into your new thermos pane without changing the frame.
Do you make custom thermos panes?
Yes. Every thermos pane is custom-made to the exact dimensions of your frame, in double or triple glazing, with or without Low-E argon. Whether for a window, a patio door or a commercial storefront, the glass is cut to the right thickness and installed in your existing frame.
What makes a quality thermos pane?
A quality thermos pane — technically an Insulated Glass Unit (IGU) — relies on three things: a spacer that separates the panes and holds a desiccant, an argon gas fill, and above all a dual-seal edge. That seal determines lifespan: durable units are built to industry standards (ASTM E2190, which replaced the older E774, and ASTM C1249 for the sealant). We install sealed units designed to these standards, so the fog doesn't come back.
